Happy,Healthy Indoor Cats

Contrary to popular belief, indoor cats can get just as much exercise and mental stimulation as outdoor cats. It simply becomes our job as their caretakers to give them the opportunities they need. There are many different ways to engage your cat's mind and help her get her exercise.

Many cats will entertain themselves when provided with the appropriate toys. Toys that hang from doorknobs and swing when batted or faux-mice, small balls, or puzzles where your cat must reach through something to bat at the toy are all good self-entertainment.

If you'd like to join your kitty in playing, you can try throwing small balls, playing with many forms of toys meant for people to bounce at the end of a pole or string, or try using a laser pointer. Cats often love to chase the light from a laser all over the floor; just be sure you have plenty of batteries on hand, and don't point the light in their eyes as it can cause damage. Any of these ideas will help increase the bond between you and your cat.

To work their minds, you can try tucking their food behind a bowl, paper bag, or other object, making them use all their senses to locate dinner just as they would in nature. This gives your cat something to work at, and provides a sense of accomplishment when they "hunt" their meal! If you don't want to do that with their main meal, you can always hide cat treats in corners, under pillows, and other unusual places so your cat can hunt her snacks.

If your cat is overweight or out of shape, try some of these tricks and feel free to ask us about a more optimal food for her. We want to help you have a happy, healthy kitty!

Holistic Health Care for Cats
By Jenna McDonald

As we learn more and more about our furred friends, we're trying more and more ways of keeping them healthy and happy. One of these ways is holistic care. Holistic care refers to seeing your pet and his symptoms as an entire organism, a whole being, rather than "just" an upset stomach or "only" hairballs. Holistic care has been used in some cultures for thousands of years.

While allopathic medicine -- the type we're all familiar with -- treats each symptom, holistic medicine sees those symptoms as a guidepost to an underlying problem and treats that, instead. Allopathic and holistic medicine work best when used in tandem. Holistic health care can include:

It is important to find a holistic vet versed in both holistic care and allopathic medicine. The Pet People staff will be happy to help you find a holistic vet in the area, should you desire it.
